On Tuesday, October 13, Bert Edwards Science and Technology School made history, participating in the largest ever recording of O Canada! The project, part of an initiative by Heritage Canada to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our national flag, sent a recording group across Canada to record the voices of students in schools across our nation. Only two schools in Kamloops were chosen, ourselves and St. Ann's. The students have spent the last few weeks rehearsing the words to O Canada, creating artwork, and learning about the history of our Maple Leaf flag. Recording was done Tuesday morning in groups of 2-3 classes at a time, where students also learned more about the history of our flag. It was a great experience that the students really seemed to enjoy! I'm so glad we were able to take part! Keep an eye out at www.flagofcanada.ca in the new year (or possibly as early as December) for the final recording to be posted. Another year has begun, and with it an exciting opportunity for our school and our students! We have been selected to take part in a special commemorative Recording of O Canada, one that is hoping to create a new world record! Only two schools in Kamloops were chosen to take part in this special 50th Anniversary celebration of the Flag of Canada, and we were one of those schools! On October 13th, a special recording crew will be coming to our school to record the voices of our students, which will then be combined with the voices of students from all over Canada to create one massive recording of our National anthem, which will then be delivered to every major library from coast to coast. More information about this exciting event can be found at: www.flagofcanada.ca
As part of this initiative, we are practicing singing O Canada, and are learning about the history of the flag of Canada and about what makes us Canadian. You can support your child at home by talking to them about your families history in Canada and what it means to you to be Canadian. Also, you can go to this link to practice the singing of O Canada with your child (It is important that we use this recording as this will be the one the main recording is based off Students in the primary classes have been busy working on their primary plays. Each class has been working on a play that puts together all the skills we have been learning this year, and include drama, movement, and music.
Mr. Hummel's Grade 1 class performed their dance of the life cycle of the flower last week and did such a wonderful job! If anyone has some pictures they took of the performance, please send me a couple to put up here as I got so busy I forgot to take some pictures! Upcoming plays: Tuesday, June 9: 10:40 - Mrs. Farber’s Kindergartens present: The Fox Who Lost His Supper - a short musical play about a group of barnyard fowl who work together to chase away a hungry fox, in the most creative way. 11:30 - Ms. Bowden’s Kindergartens present: The Sneaky Sam - a short musical story and dance about a very special group of Pirates who would much rather dance and sing than fight. Friday, June 12: 10:40 - Mrs. Weber’s Grade 2’s present: The Boy and the Tree of the Animals - a short musical play, based in Africa, that tells of a young boy and his adventures in finding the Tree of the Animals and the animals of the jungle that guard it. 11:30 - Ms. Chernoff’s Grade ½ ‘s present: Silly Jack - a short musical play about a very silly young man who just can’t seem to do anything right, with the most hilarious results. The primary classes have been having fun for the past week experimenting with and playing with our new xylophones! We've been learning all about sound and how the length and size of an instrument has to do with the pitch (high/low) of the instrument. The larger the boomwhacker or xylophone bar, the lower the pitch it produces! And the smaller the instrument, the higher the sound! Here's a little clip of our fun in Ms. Bowden's kindergarten class using their new knowledge to help put the xylophone bars in order according to low to high pitch:)
